For his failure, Diego is sent to find and retrieve the baby. Soto leads a raid on the human camp, during which Roshan's mother is separated from the rest and jumps down a waterfall when cornered by Soto's lieutenant, Diego. Meanwhile, Soto, the leader of a Smilodon pride, wants revenge on a group of humans by eating the chief's baby son, Roshan, alive. Not wanting to be alone and unprotected, Sid follows Manny. Sid is soon saved by Manfred ("Manny"), an agitated mammoth who fights them off and is heading north. Sid, a clumsy ground sloth left behind by his family, decides to move on by himself but is attacked by two Brontops whom he angered by ruining their meal. The animals are trying to avoid the ice age by migrating south. He barely escapes, but finds himself stepped on by a herd of prehistoric animals. Eventually, as he tries to stomp it into the ground, he causes a large crack in the ground that extends for miles and miles and sets off a large avalanche. All ages will enjoy the facial expressions, body language and - I have to say it - performances of the ice age mammals, so vivid and so true that you may forget that they are pixels, not people.Episode Description: A saber-toothed squirrel (known as Scrat) is trying to find a place to store his prized acorn. The pristine settings convey a sense of vastness and promise that will make grown-up viewers pause to think about whether civilization has been all that civilized. The computer animation in Ice Age is truly magnificent, from the majestic ice-covered mountains to the texture of the fur and feathers, the glint of the sun on ice, and soft sparkle of the snowflakes falling at night. Their voices are edgy and distinctive, perfectly matched with their characters. Interestingly, the three lead voices are provided by performers who began as stand-up comics rather than actors. But it's told with terrific energy, imagination, visual invention, and humor and it moves along very quickly. It doesn't reach the level of Shrek for wit, there is no romance to keep the grown-ups happy, and the plot has no surprises. This movie is a solid choice for kids old enough to handle the cartoonish violence.
